ASSESSMENTS FOR BOOK ONE

~ Written Assessment ~

Written assessments are completed at the testing site. You will have the opportunity to choose the topic from a provided list. You will be asked to write a well-developed essay that will answer the questions with supporting evidence from the story. Incorporate at least two literary techniques or devices within the task.

~ Graphic Organizer ~

Graphic organizers will be completed at the testing site. You will have the opportunity to choose the style of graphic organizer. You will be asked to identify the plot, characters, setting, conflict, theme, etc., of the story and provide supporting details for each literary element/device you select.

~ Projects ~

Choose a project from the list below. Complete the project at home and bring it to the testing site to present it and discuss it with an assessor.

Main Idea Collage:  Use standard poster board for your background. Be sure to use images or objects large enough to be easily seen. Use a minimum of 10 images or objects to represent all or several literary elements.

Poem: Create a poem about the book or a character. Your poem should be at least 100 words long. You may record your poem or write it on paper.

Prequel or Sequel: Create a prequel or sequel to the book. Either version must include two main characters in a setting from the book. Your story should be at least 150 words.

Pack a Project: Find a container that represents something unique about the book. Fill the container with at least 10 objects that represent something about the character or story. You may not use pictures, drawings, or words (objects only).

Editorial Cartoon: Create an editorial cartoon for the story that you have read. The cartoon must contain at least five of the most important characteristics of the story. Be prepared to explain every one of your characteristics in detail.

Diorama: Use a small box (shoebox size) to create a 3-dimensional miniature scene in which characters, animals, and objects are arranged in a setting pertaining to the book.

How do I get a Library card from the Lockport Public Library?

You must present identification that includes your name and current address. You may use a recent report card or a piece of mail that you have received at your home that has your name on it. Parents must sign a form authorizing the issuance of a library card to a child under the age of 13.
Your first library card is free of charge. Replacement cards are $1.00. There is no charge for updating information in the database or for renewing expired cards. If you forget your library card, you may check items out with another valid form of identification such as a driver's license.

We hope you enjoy participating in this program. Have a happy and safe summer.
