Microsoft Publisher is going away!

If you use Microsoft Publisher, PLEASE READ!

Microsoft is discontinuing Microsoft Publisher in the near future. The Library will no longer have Publisher on its computers sometime in the next few months.

If you have saved Publisher files that you plan to look at and/or edit in the future:

  • Open Publisher file.
  • Go to File > Save as.
  • Choose a location to save the file.
  • Select PDF as the file type and Save

You will only be able to do this if you had previously saved your Publisher file as a PDF file.

  • Open the PDF file. It might open in your browser, or it might open in Adobe Reader.

You will only be able to do this if you had previously saved your Publisher file as a PDF file.

  • Open Microsoft Word.
  • Go to File Open.
  • Locate and open the PDF file that you created previously. You may need to click the File Type drop-down menu in the lower right and select PDF so that those show up in the list!
  • Select OK in the dialog box.
  • From here your document will open as a Word file. You may need to adjust the formatting.
  • Per Microsoft, “The converted Word document will be optimized for text editing. As a result, its layout may vary from the original PDF—particularly if the document includes many graphics.”

Another option: If you have a personal canva.com account, you can upload your PDF to canva and edit it there.

PRINTING POLICY:

  • Please ask at the Reference Desk if you need help sending documents to the printer.
  • Printing defaults to Black & White. If you need to print in Color, you must select the Color printer before sending your document to the printer.
  • Black & white $0.15 per page / Color $0.50 per page. Cash only (bills or coins).
  • The payment machine can't accept more than $20 at a time. If a single print job's cost is over $20, please break it into two or more separate print jobs before sending it to the printer.
  • Double-sided printing is NOT available.
  • No free printouts are provided.
  • Refunds are provided only when the photocopier malfunctions.
  • Printing is available until 10 minutes prior to closing.
  • Make sure your document has printed to your satisfaction before closing your document or ending your session.

HOW TO SEND YOUR WORK TO THE PRINT STATION:

  • Do a "Print Preview" before sending to the printer to make sure that the number of pages is correct, that no blank pages show, that the text on the page is complete, and that the correct printer (color or black & white) and paper size have been selected. Not all web sites are designed to print what you see on the screen. If you don't want to print the entire thing, now's the time to make note of which pages you DO want to print. Ask for help if you are unsure.
  • Printers available in the Print Options menu:
    • BLACK AND WHITE - 15 cents per page:
      • B&W (8-1/2 x 11") - MAKE SURE YOU'VE SELECTED LETTER SIZED PAPER
      • B&W LEGAL (8-1/2 x 14") - MAKE SURE YOU'VE SELECTED LEGAL SIZED PAPER
      • B&W LEDGER (11 x 17") - MAKE SURE YOU'VE SELECTED LEDGER (11x17) PAPER
    • COLOR - 50 cents per page:
      • COLOR (8-1/2 x 11") - MAKE SURE YOU'VE SELECTED LETTER SIZED PAPER
      • COLOR LEGAL (8-1/2 x 14") - MAKE SURE YOU'VE SELECTED LEGAL SIZED PAPER
      • COLOR LEDGER (11 x 17") - MAKE SURE YOU'VE SELECTED LEDGER (11x17) PAPER
  • To print all of the pages, click the button next to "All." If you don't want to print all of the pages, type in the page numbers of the pages you do want to print.
  • After selecting your print options and clicking Print, wait for the "Print this job?" box to come up. You will see the total number of pages that you will send to the Print Station, the price per page, and the total cost to print those pages.

    • If this is not what you want to print, click on CANCEL and make any changes, or select different options in the Print Options menu. Then click Print again.
    • If this is what you want to print, click on OK. Wait for the "Print Complete" box to come up; it should say "Your job has been received."  Now click on OK to finish sending your work to the Print Station.

HOW TO PAY FOR AND RELEASE YOUR PRINTOUT:

Bring your library card (or guest pass) and money (cash only) to the computer on the table next to the photocopier.

Click on Release a Print Job, using the mouse. (Do not press any buttons on the photocopier!)

Make sure your document has printed to your satisfaction before closing your document or ending your session.
